Practising Self-Compassion | Jasmin Zenobia

Self-compassion and self-love is a concept that many people struggle with and we can be incredibly hard on ourselves if things go wrong.

Our generation in particular (hey millennial’s) has a hunger and drive to succeed which can often lead us not taking care of ourselves and forgetting to give ourselves a break. Sound familiar?

Being kind to myself is something I personally struggle with on a daily basis. I am slowly learning that punishing myself every time something goes wrong is unhealthy and unproductive. I have started to make some changes to the way I think and act to be more self-compassionate and I wanted to share them with you all, in the hope that it might help someone else that can be a bit hard on themselves!

In the words of RuPaul, “If you can’t love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else?”

Change your mindset

This is probably the hardest thing when it comes to being more self-compassionate and it doesn’t happen overnight! Sometimes we can get into bad habits of being unkind to ourselves and getting out of that cycle can take some time.

I find it really helpful to be more aware of my own behaviour. Try to notice how you are reacting to situation and how you are making yourself feel, taking note and realising how often you are unkind to yourself can make you realise your own feelings towards yourself.

Imagine how you would treat a child

This is a tip which I picked up in a book a long time ago, if you were comforting a child, you would be kind, caring and supportive of them (hopefully).

Try and compare that to how you treat yourself, if you take a moment to imagine yourself as a child when you are being overly hard on yourself, would you still be saying these things? This might feel weird at first but it’s a good way to force yourself to get into a different mindset.

Spend time doing things you enjoy

The best part of being good to yourself… Treat. Yo. Self.

I say this way too often to myself and my friends when making unjustified and unnecessary purchases, however, it is one of the easiest ways to recognise your hard work and do something fun.

Treating yourself doesn’t have to be a £150 ASOS order, it can be anything such as taking a bath, going out for a walk or spending time on your own. It doesn’t have to be material, the most important thing is that you feel good doing it.

Recognising your achievements is really important and a great way to easily be self-compassionate. These can be the smallest of things such as reaching a step count on your FitBit or completing an important task. On days where you may not feel like achieving much, be proud of yourself for just doing the basics.
