#MentalHealthAwarenessWeek – Body Image

This week is #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek hosted by the Mental Health Foundation, it runs from the 13th – 19th May 2019. This years theme is how we think and feel about our bodies and our body image. The theme this year is an important one, body image is something which is being spoken about more frequently and the theme opens up the conversation which is a good thing.

Body image issues can affect all of us at any age, I have personally struggled with body image since I was around 11 years old. I remember looking into the mirror and analyzing myself and not being particularly happy with what I saw. It’s something which most people struggle with I believe, especially in modern times with us being bombarded with advertisements of the ‘perfect’ depiction of how we should dress, weigh and look like.

The lack of confidence in my body continued throughout my teenage years and into my 20s even now I struggle sometimes. It’s something that I’m learning to deal with and I am taking steps to be healthier and take care of my body more, rather than abusing it.

Sofie Hagen has been a big influence on how I feel about my own body. Her latest book ‘Happy Fat’ talks about body positivity, fatness and loving your body no matter what.

She encourages you to love yourself as you are and she’s a really positive influence on anyone who is struggling right now with their image or fear of being overweight. I would really recommend her book, plus, she’s honestly hilarious and will have you cracking up as you’re reading.

I’ve previously written a blog post on how to love yourself which is linked here, where I talk about my progression in learning to love myself and accepting my body also.
