What To Do When You’re Having a Bad ‘Mental Health’ Day

You’ve probably clicked on this post because you’re either having a bad day, you’re scrolling social media and this popped up or your just genuinely interested in what I have to say. Either way that’s cool with me, welcome.

Quick disclaimer – I’m certainly not an expert, this is just what helps me. If you are feeling low please seek help from a doctor or medical professional.

Mental health is becoming something that more and more people are speaking up about and sharing their own personal experiences. It’s more prominent in the media and blogger friends of mine have inspired me to write this.

I’m not going to go into detail about my own personal problems, mainly because I don’t feel the need to share it but I thought I would write this post to maybe help others with some coping mechanisms.

It’s 7am and your alarm has just gone off to get up for the day, however you feel an impending sense of doom and it sweeps over you, immediately you are overwhelmed.

I have these days and they are often bad, my immediate reaction is to pull the covers over my head and hope for the best. Some days I do that, stay in bed and let it get the better of me. I’ll admit that and if that’s what I need to do that day then I will.

Reach out – My first port of call on these days is my friends, I usually message them and we spend a day either just hanging out or spending time in cafes with our laptops discussing anything and everything. It’s good to talk to people and get things out when you are feeling down. I’m very lucky to have a good support network around me and I thank you all for being there for me.

Time for yourself – It’s important to take time for yourself when you have days like this. I’ve often been called a ‘flake’ or ‘let down’ if I cancel things that I’d planned to go to, but if I’m not in the right mind set then there’s no point me doing something I don’t want to do.

Switch off – Sometimes scrolling social media for hours and getting sucked into Instagram and Twitter isn’t the best thing to do if you’re having a bad day. I find that turning off my phone and laptop and picking up a book or magazine can help if I’m in the mood too.

Get outside – I’m someone who hates being stuck inside for too long. Going out to even the garden centre, Costa or a walk can really help clear my mind.

What do you do to help these days? Comment below

Hope you enjoyed this post.
